Who Are We?

We, (Paul and Angela Neufeld) have been farming this portion of land for 17 years, committed to organic, sustainable farming practices from the beginning.  In 2011, we made the move from East Vancouver to live here in South Surrey, and, until 2020, Paul managed the sustainable agriculture program at A Rocha as well as the land A Rocha leased from Kingfisher Farm.  We are now in our second year of farming exclusively at Kingfisher Farm. Last year we took the leap into making a living off the land by selling vegetables, flowers and more through our Tuesday market, online sales, flower subscription programs and vegetable sales to restaurants.  We are excited for what this years harvest will hold.

By choosing to support local farmers you are choosing a healthier, more sustainable way of living, cutting down on transportation costs and staying connected to how and where your food is grown.  You are also paying a more realistic price for food that more accurately reflects the cost for the farmers making their living from growing that food. 

Farming methods
There are many ways to live and many ways to farm.  Here at Kingfisher we try to live responsibly and farm with care for the earth without being dogmatic, knowing that we are all on a journey and our practices will change and grow over time!  The word "sustainable" has often been applied to our way of farming.  I feel that the minimum standard for sustainability means using methods that allow us to produce healthy crops without damaging our ecosystem and depleting the soil.  The "even better" level, to which we aspire, is to leave our land even better than we found it!

To that end we spread lots of compost on our field every year, we use natural amendments to feed soil life and we grow cover crops which we incorporate back into the soil to build organic matter.  We never spray synthetic chemicals on our land for the purpose of killing weeds, insects or diseases. We try to minimize soil disturbance and maximize biodiversity by planting a wide variety of vegetable crops in our fields and we see the wider community as allies in joining us to foster an environment of biodiversity that is beautiful, healthy for people, and attractive to all kinds of pollinators and other wild critters!

Who lives at Kingfisher Farm?
We are a group of families that live together and care for the land at 512-172 Street.  Together we are committed to growing food sustainably, caring for the ponds and forest, supporting biodiversity and reaching out to the local community.

Tim supplied us with hearty whole wheat sourdough bread throughout the 2020 market season with options like cinnamon and raisin, pumpkin seed, walnut and honey and more. @the_freelance_agrarian ​
We've enjoyed having Tara join us in our baked section of the market with fresh sourdough bagels every Tuesday. @southrocksourdough  
 Brent makes beautiful art frames out of upcycled wood.  He has a studio onsite here and displays a selection of his prints weekly at the market.  Pastiche Art
